How the €8,500 is broken down
The €8,500 figure is a combined total of two different grants. If you qualify for the full amount, the money is split like this:
- €5,000 Scrappage Allowance: A flat grant from the government to scrap your older internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle.
- €3,500 SEAI Grant: The standard existing grant available for buying a new electric vehicle.
By combining the new scrappage bonus with the current SEAI framework, you can cut up to €8,500 directly off the price of a brand-new EV.
Does your current car qualify?
To get the €5,000 scrappage allowance, your current petrol or diesel car needs to be at least 13 years old or older.
Applicants must demonstrate on the date of application that the ICE vehicle:
- Has been registered in their name within the State for at least 12 months prior to the application;
- Holds a valid NCT certificate, or one expired by no more than six months;
- Has been taxed and insured for road use during the six months prior to the application.
Why consider the switch now?
Aside from the upfront discount, upgrading an older car to an EV drastically cuts down your day-to-day costs. You’ll completely eliminate your petrol or diesel bills, pay the lowest band of road tax, and experience much lower servicing costs because electric motors have fewer moving parts to repair or replace.
